The human body has a surface area of about 1.5-2 m2, considering an average thickness of the surface layers of 2-3 mm. After skeletal muscles, the skin is one of the largest organs by extension and weight, accounting for 15% of body weight. The skin has two fundamental and exceptional properties :
- Self-repair: It regenerates after an injury
- Extensibility: It adapts perfectly to changes in body size that occur during the life
What is the importance of this organ?
The skin performs many essential functions :
- A natural barrier against external aggressions (shock, bacteria, viruses, pollution, ultraviolet rays, cold, trauma, etc.)
- Place of synthesis of vitamin D essential for osteogenesis
- Participates in the thermoregulation mechanism
- Immune defence organ
- Communication organ with psychosocial function
- The skin is the organ of a relationship with the outside world and the reflection of various internal disorders, both organic and psychic.

Skin treatment in Turkey: Healing fish to fight psoriasis?
According to an experimental study in Austria, an unusual treatment could offer relief to people living with psoriasis. A fish found in Turkish thermal waters is said to effectively rid the skin of dead cells characteristic of this type of chronic disease.
In this study, 67 patients, aged 10 to 75 years, with moderate to severe psoriasis, took a daily hot bath with 250 to 400 Garra Rufa fish 5 cm to 10 cm long. The participants underwent this therapy for three weeks.
Each bath, which lasted two hours, was followed by an ultraviolet (UV) light exposure session. The researchers were inspired by the treatments provided for the past 30 years in a sunny spa located at a high altitude in Kangal, Turkey.
The young fish of the carp family fed on the skin scales of the patients efficiently enough to produce tangible results.
Participants were examined before and after the skin treatment in Turkey using a test known as the Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI). The study’s authors found that 46.3% of participants experienced significant relief from their symptoms. These subjects had improved their PASI scores by 75%.
The authors hope that clinical trials will be conducted with more subjects to confirm these favourable results.
Currently, there are few options for people seeking to alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis: light therapy, cortisone ointments or medication. About 2% of the Western population is affected by this chronic skin disease.
